The undergraduate program of precision instruments of Hefei University of Technology (HFUT), one of the earliest undergraduate programs of precision instrument in China, was established in 1959, and the 1st department of HFUT was founded in 1977. After that, it was renamed as Department of Precision Instruments in 1984, School of Instruments & Apparatus in 2004, and School of Instrument Science and Opto-electronics Engineering in 2005. We have made significant contribution to our country in the research of instrument science and technology and cultivated a large number of outstanding professionals for the country in the last 6 decades.

The School is one of the most prestigious schools specialized in instrument science and technology in China. The subject of Instrument Science and Technology of the School was ranked in the top 10 according to the results of the third round of China Discipline Evaluation, and was one of the three subjects of HFUT that were ranked in the top 10. The subject was rated as B+ in the fourth round of China Discipline Evaluation and ranked in the top 8.

There are 98 academic faculties, including 24 full professors and 18 doctoral supervisors, and 17 staffs in the School. Among the faculty members, there are one recipient of National Outstanding Youth Fund, one recipient of National Project of Millions of Talents, and one recipient of New Century Excellent Researcher Award Program from the Ministry of Education of China, and seven Huangshan scholars, and more than 60 percent of them have overseas research experience.

We are well reputed for undergraduate cultivation in China. There are 4 undergraduate programs, i.e. Measurement and Control Technology and Instrumentation, Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and IntelliSense Engineering. Among these programs, Measurement and Control Technology and Instrumentation program is a National Featured Program, and had passed the first- and second-round National Engineering Education Professional Certification in 2012 and 2018, respectively. Measurement and Control Technology and Instrumentation and Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering programs were certified as National First-Class Undergraduate Programs in 2019 and 2020, respectively. Biomedical Engineering program was selected as Anhui Excellent Engineer Training Program in 2012, and is a Featured Program of Anhui province. At present, there are about 1200 undergraduates in the School.

Strong attention has been payed to the cultivation of undergraduates' ability of engineering practice and innovation. There is one laboratory and two science and technology innovation centers for undergraduate training in the school. In recent years, the undergraduates in the School have won the first-class prizes in the “Challenge Cup” National College Students Extracurricular Science and Technology Works Competition for many times. Every year, there are about 80 undergraduates in the School win prizes in various innovation and entrepreneurship competitions, such as Freescale Cup National Smart Car Contest, National Photoelectric Design Competition for Undergraduates, and National Virtual Instrument Competition for Undergraduates.

The master's degree program of the School dates back to 1978, when the postgraduate education was resumed in China, and the doctoral degree program of the School was among the first five doctoral degree programs qualified by the Ministry of Education of China in the field of Instrument Science and Technology. At present, there are one master’s degree program and one doctoral degree program, i.e. Instrument Science and Technology, and 4 sub-doctoral programs, i.e. Precision Instrument and Machinery, Measuring and Testing Technologies, Optoelectronic Information Engineering, and Biomedical Instrumentation. In addition, there is one post-doctoral research station in the School. At present, there are about 640 postgraduates in the School.

There are two national-level key laboratories, i.e. State Key Laboratory of Modern Imaging and Display Technology and National Engineering Laboratory for Special Display Technology, and two provincial-level key laboratories, i.e. Key Laboratory of Measurement Theory and Precision Instruments of Anhui Province and Key Laboratory of Modern Testing and Manufacturing Quality Engineering of Anhui Universities affiliated to the School. We are also funded by Overseas Expertise Introduction Project for Discipline Innovation on Modern Testing Technology and Precision Engineering which is supported by the Ministry of Education and the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, China. Our faculty members lead Modern Precision Engineering Research Center, Nanometer Measurement Laboratory, Coordinate Measurement and Intelligent Sensing Laboratory, Laboratory of Machine Vision and Automatic Optics, Ultrasound Imaging Laboratory, Magnetic Resonance Imaging Laboratory, etc.

The research of the faculty members has been funded by National Major Scientific Research Instrument Development Project, Key Project of National Key Research and Development Program, National Major Scientific Instrument and Equipment Development Program, Major National Science & Technology Project, National Natural Science Foundation of China, etc. We have won over 50 research grants in the last 3 years, and the average annual funding is more than 30 million RMB.

The School is active in international cooperation with the United States of America, Germany, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Russia, Republic of Korea, etc., both in research and student cultivation. We provide regular opportunities for the students to study and conduct research in world-leading organizations.

Our vision is to cultivate outstanding students, and develop cutting-edge technologies to serve our country better. We will do our best to play a key role from basic research to innovation in the field of Instrument Science and Technology in China.
